Description
People in Ireland are generally very respectful of nature and of history, and many of Ireland's churches, forts and buildings from ages pasts are still standing, although worn. Still, many more of those archaeological sites have been worn by weather and time, or destroyed by machinery and modernization. In older times in which many Irish folktales took place, more kinds of animals were present than exist in Ireland today. But the species that remain have changed very little. So in a way, I felt like watching animals in Ireland was looking at remnants of the past.
But many Irish people have left behind the tradition of storytelling, and the mythological roles that many of Ireland's animals hold are not as strong as before. With this project I wanted to pay homage to the sense of mythological power the barn owl (as contributor to the myth of the banshee with its ghostly scream) would have held hundreds of years ago.
Watercolor, and a little graphite and colored pencil on watercolor paper - A3 size (about 12 by 16 inches)
